Little gifts 🎁 for the mums and babies at #postnatalyoga today. Tea, chocolate and massage oil. Pure organic coconut oil for the babies and coconut oil with essential oils of rose, lavender and sandalwood for mums. After a little warm up with some songs, stretching and baby yoga we learned abdominal massage for our babies and also for our own self care. It was our last class for this year and a full house! Thanks to everyone who has joined the #mothernurturenorthumberland family this year. I'll be in touch soon with dates for January x #postpartum #postnatal #newmum #babyyoga #babymassage #mothernurture #fourthtrimester #northumberland #lucymaresh #aspacetobeyogaretreat #shilbottle
Round about eleven years ago I was pregnant with my first child and I discovered something exciting about my body – it’s FEMALE! Now, that might sound obvious, but to be quite honest I had never really thought about it – awkward reminders like my period were something I generally tried to avoid with the contraceptive pill – or just pretend it wasn’t happening. Pregnancy, and the yoga practices I learned during my pregnancy, helped me see that my female body is pretty awesome – and giving birth helped me see my female body is pretty damn powerful. I continue to do my yoga practice in a way that is respectful and kind to my female body – e.g. my wider pelvis, larger pelvic floor (with an extra hole), existence of my uterus and its monthly shape-shifting to name just a few obvious things that make me different from a man. “Mother Nurture Yoga” is my name for the yoga practices I have used to look after my energy and wellbeing in the last ten years. Broadly speaking this includes deep relaxations, long exhalations, joint liberation and lots of stabilisation (physically and otherwise!) I discovered that I didn’t need stretching so much any more – my connective tissue was looser, my hormones were wilder and everything about life with my family was stretching me already. I craved containment and quietness, strength and stillness. I have rested a lot but weirdly also got stronger and fitter that I have ever been previously. I like to call this “Soft Power” and I have no explanation for it other than to look at the natural world around me and see that all of its power comes in very clear cycles of resting and growing – its just not ‘normal’ to always be making an effort! I’m sharing all this more widely now via my quarterly workshops called ‘Being in the Cycles‘, which are open to all women. The next one is coming up on Sunday 15 December - watch this space for more details. #beinginthecycles #mothernurturenorthumberland #lucymaresh #iamlisteningtomyowninnerwisdom #softpower
Posted @withrepost • @lucymaresh As winter intensifies in our outer world many of us feel a call to slow down and gather inwards. A long winter hibernation may not be practical or accessible for a modern woman, but how might we give ourselves a taste of that, and honour that call to embrace the darkest time of the year? How might be embrace the monthly call to gather inward that can accompany menstruation, or prepare ourselves for times we are unwell, devastated by loss, or simply overwhelmed? 'Inner winter' refers to these times. The part of our menstrual cycle when we are bleeding; the immediate postpartum; the experience of illness or surgery and subsequent recovery; feeling 'heavy' or tired; grieving; overwhelmed. Yoga practices that might support us through these phases of our lives include those which emphasise and support deep relaxation and exhalation, that do not place additional demands on a body which is bleeding or healing. At my last yoga workshop for this year, you can expect to experience yoga nidra, supported forward folds and delicate, breath-coordinated movement for the pelvis and spine. #beinginthecycles #wombyoga #shilbottle #northumberland #innerwinter #menstrualcycleawareness #hibernation #yoganidra #restorativeyoga #winter #lucymaresh
‘Baby in the Hammock’ is one of a series of movements we can do during #pregnancy on hands and knees to relieve pressure on the lower back and the pelvic floor and gently mobilise our hip joints. Imagining our baby is lying in a hammock in this position can also help us to understand what many people call #optimalfoetalposition and the related term #optimalmaternalpositioning. Optimal Foetal Positioning is a term coined by New Zealand midwifes Jean Sutton and Pauline Scott. They suggested that positions like this, if practised for 10-15 minutes twice a day during the third trimester, can help to encourage your baby into a good position for the onset of labour. “OFP is about encouraging the un-born baby to settle into the most effective position for labour and birth.” (Jean Sutton) Your baby is likely to be born more easily when he/she presents at the onset of labour with their head-down (cephalic presentation), and the back of their head towards the front of your tummy (anterior position). In other words… when your baby is in the hammock! Inspired by Jean and Pauline’s research, many people now believe that spending time on hands and knees can allow the baby wiggle room to move, and also to allow gravity to act on the heaviest part of your baby (head and spine) and roll them towards your abdominal wall. This is especially important if you spend a lot of time sitting or driving during pregnancy, where the weight of your baby may gravitate towards the back of your body. #mothernurturenorthumberland #antenatalyoga #pregnancyyoga #perinatalyoga #postnatalyoga #wombyoga #shilbottle #alnwick #northumberland#lucymaresh
Lots of us carry our babies like this, with one arm acting as a kind of 'seat'. They like it as they can see what's happening - and it places our baby closer to our own centre of gravity so is good for our posture too. Lots of us also get sore wrists during pregnancy though, which can continue or even be exacerbated postnatally, so if you are carrying your baby in this way make sure you slide your arm far enough under your baby that they can sit on the forearm rather than the wrist itself. #selfcare #babycarrying #babyholds #mothernurturenorthumberland #PostnatalYoga #BabyYoga #BabyMassage #shilbottle #alnwick #northumberland #lucymaresh
The transition into motherhood can be challenging – we are navigating new territory in our bodies, daily rhythms and lifestyle. I am often asked how long it takes to ‘get back to normal’. I am not sure anyone ever does. I see every pregnancy as a rite of passage - a transition in to something new – whether its your first baby or fifth, there is no 'going back', only stepping forward. We need time to get to know the new woman that stands in our shoes. Each woman takes her own time. #iamlisteningtomyowninnerwisdom #mothernurturenorthumberland #fourthtrimester

Looking after each other in Sunday's class last week. Pregnant mamas feeling 'heavy' so we used blankets to give them some support and relief. We took the picture so husbands and friends can see how to offer this simple support at home. Later we switched and the postpartum mums enjoyed a different kind of 'blanket nurture' - which I didn't think to photograph! Another time... No classes next week as I'm away on a retreat. Back in time for classes on Wednesday 27 November and Sunday 1 December. #mothernurturenorthumberland #mothernurture #pregnancy #pregnancyyoga #prenatal #northumberland
"Last night as I was sleeping, I dreamt that I was flying... ... to the Isle of Man in a Frying Pan... And back again by morning!" Special thanks to Marie for showing us how to 'fly' your baby so they get some #tummytime and you get a bit of lower back release. This pose requires a bit of caution if you have a C-section scar or any other abdominal discomfort. #mothernurturenorthumberland #PostnatalYoga #BabyYoga #BabyMassage #shilbottle #alnwick #northumberland #lucymaresh

Gratitude

For the many hundreds of women and babies that have been part of Mother Nurture Yoga since 2008.

For Tara Fraser – who awakened in me and continues to nurture my inner teacher.

For Uma Dinsmore-Tuli – who teaches me to listen to my womb wisdom.

For Judith Hanson Lasater – who teaches me how to do nothing.

For my own two yoga-babies who teach me about  everything.

Namaste
