"I Am Listening to My Own Inner Wisdom" In a high-tech world where we are bombarded with information, paying attention to our intuitive wisdom can be pretty challenging. * This is an affirmation I use myself and in many of my classes, but especially those for pregnant women and new mothers. There is so much "expert advice" to take on board throughout pregnancy and it only intensifies once the babies arrive! Its so important also to listen to our own 'gut feelings', and to what our own perfectly individual and unique children are trying to tell us. As many of us will freely admit, no one really knows how to parent, we're all just doing our best and making quite a lot of it up as we go... * I'm sharing this image from the first of my new series of #pregnancyyoga articles (link in comments). If you're pregnant right now I welcome you to comment and/or follow #mothernurturenorthumberland to get the next instalment very soon!
I've not yet branched out into "yoga for kittens", but if you have a #happybaby like this one my Wednesday classes might be of interest. Links in comments. #theadventuresofblacktreacle
"The practice of yoga is fundamentally an act of kindness toward oneself." #judithhansonlasater A quote from the queen of restorative yoga for Random Acts of Kindness Day #RAKDay Kindness starts with yourself. You can't give out if you don't put in. #restorativeyoga #yoga #RAKDay #lucymaresh #aspacetobeyogaretreat #childspose
Morning light emerging - looks peaceful but WOW the birds are back and have a lot to talk about! #aspacetobeyogaretreat #oaktree #springiscoming
My #yoga classes are packed full of wise and wonderful beings that I immensely enjoy spending time with. Last week, one such person, who happens to be a woman enjoying her eighth decade on this planet, told me that whatever our current #age, we carry within us all the ages we have ever been. "So I can be a ten year old in a flash!" A few hours later I saw this amazing image of a sculpture by Italian artist Giuseppe Penone. He carefully removes the rings of growth from a tree trunk to reveal the "sapling within".
Yoga on the beach in Alnmouth in February! * Thanks to lovely Sofia Barnes @alwayslovelovealways for this beautiful image from our Well Woman Yoga Therapy training with @umadinsmoretuli and @sivanimata this time last year. * Watch this space for workshops with Uma in Northumberland February 2020. #wombyoga #totalyoganidra #yonishakti #umadinsmoretuli #lucymaresh #sivanimata #northumberlandyoga #alnmouth #northumberland
I'm re-posting this #speakthesecret comic from @postpartumstress and @familiustalk because it pretty much sums up what motivates me to keep 2 of the 7 classes on my weekly yoga schedule specifically for Mums and Mums-to-Be. . Their new book #GoodMomsHaveScaryThoughts is out soon. * For twenty years, my yoga practice has been my sanctuary, my safe place, and a framework for making sense of my whole life. Like many, I first encountered yoga as a form of exercise but it quickly became something BIGGER for me, and the yoga practices that have really sustained me through times of great exhaustion and scary thoughts have actually been very simple and restful. * When a woman comes to yoga during pregnancy or postpartum, I want to help her see that bigger picture too. So, yes, there are carefully chosen physical exercises for those that want to move, stretch and stabilise, but every #mothernurturenorthumberland class also includes; personal greetings and acknowledgement, quiet time and reflection, deep relaxation and stress-busting breathing techniques, options to do LESS - and time at the end for nutritious snacks (as well as cookies!) and sharing stories with others. * Saturdays 11.15am - Women only (suitable during pregnancy, babes-in-arms welcome) Wednesday 11.15am - Mums and Babies (up to 12 months) Links in comments
Have you tried turning it off and back on again? * Huge thanks to @jameshuntlyphotography for the beautiful #savasana photo - first of many #restorativeyoga poses I'll be sharing over the next few weeks. Since James normally captures high speed cycle racing we had an amusing time capturing the perfect stillness that characterises restorative yoga. James and I met a few years ago when we used yoga to help manage his #chronicfatigue. I am so delighted now to see his professional photography career taking off - he is just awesome - book him quick before he's too famous :)
Good morning from #shilbottle

Gratitude

For the many hundreds of women and babies that have been part of Mother Nurture Yoga since 2008.

For Tara Fraser – who awakened in me and continues to nurture my inner teacher.

For Uma Dinsmore-Tuli – who teaches me to listen to my womb wisdom.

For Judith Hanson Lasater – who teaches me how to do nothing.

For my own two yoga-babies who teach me about  everything.

Namaste
